It's Throwback Thursday.
This week, let's revisit a beautiful part of KG's past he rarely but sacredly talk about, his relationship of 7 years.
He wrote several songs about the girl and the last one is "You're the Answer to a Guy Like Me." In Strong Heart, he was asked about the girl but he evaded the question and said "She's already married."
This song essentially talks about one thing, the hopelessnes and helplessness of losing the one person you love but before we get into the message, let's talk about the song's instrument. The way Gil laid it out approximates KG's emotions.
The song uses 2 instruments as a base, bass and drums. In almost every verse, all the other instruments change. A piano, xylophone, sax, guitar and a whole lot of other instruments come in. The basic of the rhythm is retained but it is twisted and
further twisted in almost every line. In fact, if you pull the instruments apart, it will sound chaotic.
Gil is able to maintain the integrity of the rhythm by maintaining the bass and drums. It provides the illussion of consistency even though all the other instruments are "internally combusting".
This mirrors the message of the song.
Unlike other songs where the emotions ascends, KG penned it exactly how he was feeling the emotions for the girl. It's very controlled. It feels like his heart is about to explode but he is forcing it all in because the girl is not his anymore.
The result is a very "steady sounding" rap but his lines go so deep that you almost kinda feel scared that he will explode any minute. His delivery is strong and intense but low. It also sounds painful and "too big for anyone to fathom".
"I can't explain it," KG said. "That's how I feel, I feel like dying."
He begs. He pleads. He surrenders to the love he can't even contain, comprehend and control. For the first time, words is not enough for him. It's the ultimate surrender for a lyricist like him.
For a guy who makes a living out of articulating emotions, translating visions and emotions to words, to say "I don't know how to say it" is as helpless as one could be. To this girl, what he is, is not enough.
Gil attempts to represent the chaos of this love KG is losing, the love KG can't seem to express through the "chaotic" instruments. There's all sorts of instruments coming in, the melody that's being twisted and twisted. Just like the restless emotions that KG was trying hard to bottle up inside.
KG also doesn't make a conclusion in the song. KG (through Gil), instead of going back to the chorus or closing with his rap, goes to a final surrender.
KG has since not written any song for any special girl. When he wrote "Tears", he specifically said he had to create a story instead of talking about a specific experience with one person.
Maybe, the 7-year relationship is too epic for him to be inspired by anyone YET. I am convinced he will find someone and when that happens, I believe it will inspire him to try and chronicle a small part of it in his music. His music, after all, is a chronicle of his soul, life and feelings.
For now, close your eyes and listen to beautiful and painful tale of a past love.
